Three much loved Melbourne guitarists come together for a repeat of the special project Triple Fret. Kathleen Halloran is a rising star in the scene, well known for her work with Kate Ceberano, sharing the stage with a wide range of artists, and recently releasing her first solo single ‘Free With Me’. Jimi Hocking is a songwriter, singer and guitarist of the highest calibre, well known for his work with the Screaming Jets and as a solo artist. His combination of banter and story-telling, wailing guitar and mandolin with superb songwriting and performance makes Jimi one of the must-see acts in blues today.

Leon Todd is a guitarist, composer and educator who has toured the world with his original power trio Ragdoll and shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the world of Rock, Metal and Pop. In addition to his output as an artist and session musician, Leon is a prominent content creator with a popular Youtube channel covering gear reviews, tutorials and lessons, all delivered with his trademark laid back Australian style.

In this session, Leon will showcase a range of guitars and musical styles, showing you how to choose the right gear for the music you’re playing.

A musical conversation with Lloyd Spiegel

We’ve all heard that phrase ‘it all starts with the blues’ , but does it really? And Music conversation with Lloyd Spiegel, featuring Rock Academy’s Phil Ceberano, we ask the big questions and take a journey from the origins of the blues through to now. Looking at the different approaches to guitar playing and how the blues and groove and pocket have inspired players from Jeff Beck, Jimmy Paige, to Hetfield and John 5.

Phil Ceberano has a great way of asking the big questions, the sometimes dumb questions, and those questions that we will all want to ask, but might be too nervous or afraid to ask.

Lloyd Spiegel is one of Australia’s finest musicians, whose musical foundations are the blues. From this space he has written and performed and recorded his own music which he tours and performs This workshop will be an insightful, interesting and useful experience for any musicians, wanting to get back to the basics and improve their guitar playing with a reconnection back to the Blues and the Funk of where it all began.

11.15am – The Working Guitarist with Phil Ceberano

So you’ve been playing for a while, you’ve bought all the ‘right’ gear, you’ve got yourself a great guitar and you’ve got some chops. Now what? How do you take this hobbie, passion, obsession to the next level and make it work in a professional live performance scenario? How do you find parts to play in a band situation? What gear do you use for which gigs? How are supposed to collaborate and get along with other people in a band when I don’t really like people? These questions and more will be covered in Phil Ceberano’s ‘The workingman’s guitarist’ workshop. Phil has over 40 years experience as a professional musician and shares guitar tips and insights he’s learned in a very entertaining and passionate way.

This workshop focuses on the understanding of different rhythmic elements such as subdivisions, syncopation, and accents used in modern metal music. There will be a section dedicated to music writing and a performance of selected original songs that were made using these musical elements. Towards the end of the workshop there will be a discussion about guitar technique and practice habits.
